  Abstract:

Inorganic ions, as trace elements, exist in human body. They can not only influence the process of biomineralization, but also have specific pharmaceutical effects.  Compared to proteins, ions are easier to be incorporated into bioceramics, as powder, bulk, coating and injectable forms, and could be regarded as specific drugs when their pharmaceutical effect can be proven in in vitro and in vivo experiments. Biomaterialists have started to focus on their crystallographic and biological effects in a certain concentration. In this presentation, I will introduce “ion substituted bioceramics”, and what we have done and are doing in Uppsala.

  Personal information:

Wei Xia is now associate professor in Department of Engineering Sciences in Uppsala University, Sweden. He got his PhD degree from Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2007. He has worked in R&D center of Unilever on oral care. He was the postdoc fellow in BIOMATCELL Vinn Excellence center in Gothenburg University and Uppsala University. Since 2012 he became an Ass. Prof. of Materials Science in Uppsala University. He has been supported as young researcher by Sweden Research Council. Wei focuses his research in bioceramics, biomimetic and ion modified implant surfaces, functionalized nanoporous coatings, translucent ceramics and glass ceramics, and nanostructured biomaterials for hard tissue repair and regeneration and drug delivery. He is also the co-founder of a biomaterial company.
