Abstract
Multiferroic materials having simultaneous ferroelectricity and ferromagnetism offer great opportunities for applications in information storage, spin electronics, and magnetoelectronics. The scope for use of the novel materials showing both ferroelectricity and ferromagnetism in practical applications will be enormous, and there will be a huge market for magnetoelectron or spintronic, and magnetic electromechanic devices. The multiferroics offer great opportunities for potential applications in information storage, the emerging field of spintronics, transducer and sensors. For example, the demand for higher data density in information storage is motivating investigations into approaches for manipulating magnetization by means other than magnetic fields. The linear magnetoeletric effect - the induction of polarization by a magnetic field and of magnetization by an electric field-provides another route for linking magnetic and electric properties. This mutual effect points to new device applications such as magnetically recorded ferroelectric memory.
