Overview of the Research Accomplishments of Allan J. Jacobson

The overriding research interest of Allan Jacobson has been in the understanding of the relationship between composition, structure, and physical properties in a host of materials from transition metal oxides, transition metal phosphates and silicates, catalytic materials, mixed conductors, and extending to intercalation chemistry of layered materials where he has done pioneering studies on the reactivity of solids.  Not only has Dr. Jacobson worked in these fields; his contributions have often been seminal and crucial to our understanding.

Synthesis and intercalation chemistry of mixed metal oxides

-          Definitive X-ray, neutron and electron diffraction studies of many important oxide phases.

-          The synthesis and reactions of a unique series of layered oxides known as the Dion–Jacobson series.

Synthesis and intercalation chemistry of transition metal phosphates

-          Discovery of novel intercalation chemistry in vanadium phosphates.

-          The first syntheses of a new class of hybrid inorganic-organic layered compounds, the vanadium organophosphonates.

-          Pioneered the application of hydrothermal synthesis to vanadium phosphates

Synthesis of open framework and microporous transition metal silicates

-          The synthesis and reactions of a unique series of porous oxides.

-          Developed a new structural principle for designing solid structures.

Metal Oxide Organic Frameworks and Coordination Polymers

-          The synthesis and reactions of a unique series of cyanide bridged coordination polymers.

-          Discovered vanadium borophosphate cluster ions and their assembly into frameworks

-          Developed a new approach for designing homochiral porous solids.

Catalytic materials

-          Discovered a novel class of transition metal sulfide hydrotreating catalysts.

-          Discovered a novel class of catalysts for methane oxidative coupling.

-          Discovered a new electro-catalyst with comparable activity to platinum for hydrogen oxidation

Mixed electronic and ionic conducting oxides

-          Major contributions in materials, high temperature transport properties, and in oxidation catalysis in ion transport membranes

-          Pioneered the use of thin film hetero-structures for the study of surface properties of oxides.

            -      First to experimentally demonstrate the effect of surface reactions on

oxygen permeation kinetics in mixed conducting membranes.
