Functional oxide thin films and metal nanoparticles: deposition, characterization and applications

Functional materials are always the main subjects of research interests. Functional materials in the form of thin film or nanoparticle are of particular importance for applications to such fields as IT, communication, energy industry and environmental protection. We have been long dealing with a group of “chromogenic” materials characteristic of their optical properties (or color) being able to change reversibly in response to physical stimuli etc. Among the well known chromogenic materials, we are mostly engaged in the research and development of those for “smart windows” for energy saving and comfort using electrochromic, gasochromic, thermochromic thin films and a newly discovered gasochromic switchable mirror alloys. The deposition technology, characterization methods, and industrial applications will be presented in this talk. Furthermore, a combination of chromogenic materials with metal nanoparticles, which has resulted in some novel properties, will be briefly introduced.
