Innovative materials for energy conversion hold the key for renewable energy production. Aimed at developing new nanostructures for renewable photo-electrochemical energy conversion, recent advances are presented in the design, band-gap modification, and self-assembly of several types of transition metal oxide based materials including titania, manganese oxides, layered titanate, tantalates and niobate-based pervoskites. These materials underpin the potential applications in water/air purification, hydrogen production and electrochemical supercapacitors.
